Christmas at Kaarakin the Black Cockatoo Conservation Centre

Festive atmosphere for the black cockatoos

It has been great fun photographing and filming the Kaarakin black cockatoos for the Christmas theme. We had a bit of mischief going on at first with Betty, the female Red-Tailed black cockatoo, who decided to take Santa for a flight! Denmark, the Carnaby’s black cockatoo got jealous and tried everything he could to regain Betty’s attention. When we finally managed to get Santa back, there wasn’t much of him left!

Contrary to the Halloween props which consisted of Halloween buckets, all the cockatoos were a bit wary at first and took some time to approach the scene. We finally got them close to the Christmas tree and action! The video will be released on Dec 24th with a Facebook and Instagram version. The Instagram version being shorter to comply with the maximum length allowed on the Instagram platform.

The crew and I also visited the Bogong dingoes and managed to capture some great shots. It’s hard to believe they were so tiny a few months ago!

All in all, I am still weighing the pros and cons of purchasing a cheap DSLR rig to minimize handshake. The cons being that the cockatoos would more likely try to chew it and would continue to land on the camera. As a consequence, I would probably end up with more handshake issues?! What do you think? The Warp Stabiliser in Premiere Pro is still doing a great job at correcting the shaking. Verdict on Christmas Eve.
