Located in the Perth Hills, Kaarakin rescues and rehabilitates black cockatoos back to the wild. The not-for-profit organisations mainly rely on volunteers to perform various duties.

Scope of Work

Kaarakin was in need of a new website as they had outgrew their previous website. Extra CSS inserted by a previous volunteer had broken the structure of the site and there was no menu on the mobile version. On top of that, the previous theme which had been set up by another marketing agency didn’t allow us to scale the eCommerce. In this instance, it only made sense to start from scratch with a new theme and move to a Cpanel host instead of a VPS, which was easier for a not-for-profit organisation to manage without extra fees. As a volunteer at Kaarakin, I decided to choose a premium theme from Kadence, Ascend, which would allow us to scale the eCommerce activities and achieve a modern look while still upholding Kaarakin’s branding and colour palette.

On top of changing the theme of the website, I reviewed all the content present on the website and wrote new content. I have been a volunteer at Kaarakin for over 4 years and it was a good opportunity to share my wealth of knowledge about black cockatoos and the centre. All the pages were reviewed and keywords / search terms were mapped with their respective pages in order to increase Kaarakin’s presence on search engines. Other pages were created to support our SEO strategy.

The Kadence theme offers us the necessary plugins and settings to customise our online shop without having to hire a web developer. As such I was able to create an improved customer experience on the website compared to the old template.

We are using Kadence Blocks to create new pages or update most pages, which is very easy for volunteers from all walks of like to edit and staff can become responsible for their own pages. The Kadence Blocks integrate with most plugins and this means we can insert widgets such as social media posts, videos or ticketing options on specific pages from the click of a button.

The donation page was also reviewed and I decided to bypass the Gravity form. This was a very expensive options which couldn’t offer us options that are often offered with other donor management systems. I was given the green light to test Donorbox and we are very happy with the outcomes. Within 6 months we doubled the donation amounts compared to the previous year. Donorbox also allows us to have different forms with different goals, goal meters and the possibility to display a donor wall while keeping a database and having access to a simple dashboard.

Within the next 6 months

Results were seen straight away as people could navigate through the site and easily find what they were looking for. Adoption certificates were flying out of the doors and we received a significant amount of donations. Bounce rate dropped by an average of 90%. We have received great feedback from the community and from new people who first discovered the website due to higher rankings on search engines. Rankings improved some much that the website comes up on first page for a great number of search terms.
